ēmvasis - what we publish under the imprint

ēmvasis publishes work that doesn't fit easily in one place.

The books I publish under this imprint sit at the edges of categories: narrative public health, literary nonfiction, fiction rooted in historical and social reality. The common thread isn't subject matter - it's a certain quality of attention. Writing that takes the long view. Writing that trusts the reader to make their own connections.

For now, ēmvasis is building its list. The first titles in development include literary fiction examining the social history of disease across centuries, and nonfiction that draws on two decades of fieldwork in global mental health.

If you're a writer whose work shares this orientation - serious, reflective and personal, cross-disciplinary, resistant to easy packaging - and you're interested in what ēmvasis might mean for your work, get in touch.

Support the work

Independent publishing runs on attention and, occasionally, money. The two are related.

Each title ēmvasis brings to publication costs roughly £4,500 in production - cover design, copy-editing, formatting, proofing, and getting the book into distribution. This figure doesn't include the years the writing took.

If you believe in what this imprint is trying to do - serious writing that refuses easy categories, brought to readers who are looking for it - we'd welcome your support. Get in touch directly via the form above.
